May 15, 2003 (and the few days before) I've also been reviewing my plans for the big trip, checking on easy to get stamp sites that I may have missed. I did find 6 more to add to the trip, for a gain of about 150 miles. The trip is now just over 9,000 miles. I also ordered a chain, which I will replace just before I leave. I also need a new rear tire very soon, I hope to get at least the next 2 trips out of the old tire before I replace it. I ordered a battery powered motion alarm that I can put under the seat (at motels) or in my bag (while traveling). I am going to try a map flat pocket that clips on top of the tank. I don't like the tank bag because it is in the way when I fill up, but just a map flat that quickly unbuckles may be ok. It is 9x9 so it can fit most of a page of paper. I used a duplexing printer at work and printed out the big trip as strip maps, with the map at the top half of the page and about 15 instructions below it. I broke this into 2 packets, with my stop at my cousin's in Chatham, NJ as the break point. I also printed out the stamps for the states I will be going through from the LincOn site so I could have some detail as to where to find the stamps. Again, I broke this up into 2 packets. I also gave the tourbooks a diet, tearing out the states I won't need. I did put these into 4 bundles (original plan is to ship care packages to Montreal, Chatham, and Atlanta), but I may go with just 2. It really depends on how much I can fit into the new tail bag. The trial run with be at the end of May. Finally, I took a highlighter and marked the route on the state maps. I need to break these up into bundles, also. |
