Day 4 - Lake of the Pines, CA to Sylmar, CA - 412 miles I left Dad's at 11:30. I've done the ride home from here many times. Since it was a Monday, I decided to take CA-99 for the full distance through the valley instead of I-5. The distance is almost exactly the same, but I-5 is mostly 70mph and has no cross traffic. CA-99 has several stretches of cross traffic and is only about 50% built to interstate standards. Instead of building I-5 over US-99 like most of I-5 north of Sacramento, the highway planners built I-5 on the west side of the valley, parallel to CA-33. US-99 was turned over to the state and became CA-99. CA-99 goes through the major cities of the southern central valley. I-5 takes a much more lonely route. I pulled into the garage at 18:10. I spent 5:46 in the saddle, averaging 71.4 mph. 2,501 miles in all. |
